Proprietor Warns Parents to Desist from “Miracle Centres”:

The Proprietor, Good Shepherd Schools, Meiran, Lagos, Dr. Adebayo Oyeyemi, has warned parents not to enrol their children in “miracle centres” where they engage in examination malpractice.

The educationist, who spoke to our correspondent on Wednesday in Lagos, said such centres were only breeding pupils who would not be able to defend the certificates.

He said, “It is unfortunate that many parents are after their  children getting certificates at all costs.  After succeeding in getting such certificates from these dubious places, the certificates will now be bigger than them. This is because the owners are intellectually deficient to demonstrate the proficiency of the certificates.”

Oyeyemi said parents should encourage their children to read and pass their examination, instead of looking for quick-fix solutions, which might lead to regrets in the future.

He added, “That is why we have graduates presently who cannot write a sentence without committing grammatical blunder. We need to rescue education and I believe the government alone cannot do it, the parents, teachers and other stakeholders must join hands with the government.”

Oyeyemi, who noted that getting competent teachers to employ was a Herculean task, said there were many Nigerian graduates with good grades who cannot defend their certificates.

He stated, “It is difficult getting competent teachers to employ these days. When we advertise for vacancies and they come, it is difficult to get competent ones. But here, we insist on getting the competent ones, with godly virtues.”

On other problems facing the nation’s education, Oyeyemi noted particularly that policy inconsistency was causing great harm to the sector.

According to him, politicians are not after what they can give to education but what they can get and it is unfortunate they are not putting what they get into that sector. (Punch)
