Stampede: EBSU students protest, management reacts

Following reports that an unconfirmed number of students fainted in a stampede that occurred at the Ebonyi state university while trying to write an exam on Wednesday, aggrieved students of the institution staged a peaceful protest on Thursday, February 11.

According to reports, the stampede happened when an exam meant to be written at two locations was scheduled to only hold at one venue with over 10,000 students in attendance. It is also alleged that over 30 students lost their phones and tablets while trying to enter into the CBT centre.

The protesting students blocked the Abakaliki - Enugu Expressway, demanding an end to the computer-based test examination. It took the intervention of the Deputy Governor of Ebonyi State, Barrister Eric Kelechi Igwe for the students to back down from the protest.

Reacting to the unfortunate incident, the Management of the Ebonyi State University, EBSU, has apologized to students of the institution, assuring them that the "unfortunate incident" that led to the stampede and fainting of students won't repeat itself.

The management, however, maintained that no life was lost as widely speculated, and thanked the stateĀ  Governor, David Nweze Umahi for putting the situation under control.
