Governor Kashim Shettima of Borno State yesterday ordered the Commissioner for Universal Education Board (UBE), Prof Abba Tijjani, to demolish blocks of classrooms burnt by Boko Haram sect members which were renovated by the federal government in Abbaganaram primary and junior secondary schools. He said the structures were poorly executed and were unacceptable to his administration.
Shettima gave the directive when he launched the distribution of free exercise books, uniforms and other instructional materials for primary and post-primary schools in the burnt schools.
“Honestly, those who were given the contract for renovation of these classroom blocks by the federal government did a shoddy job. We will not allow our students to use such structures, because apart from not being conducive for learning, the structures have no ventilation.
“We will release money immediately to demolish and reconstruct new classroom blocks in this school, fitted with security lights, fans and other facilities that will make the students feel comfortable when learning,” Shettima stated.
The governor was impressed by the pupil turnout at the school and therefore directed the rector, Ramat Polytechnic Maiduguri, Professor Babagana Umara, to supply 2000 units of furniture to the school out of those provided to the polytechnic.
