The Chairman, Senate Committee on Education, Senator Uche Chukwumerije, has reiterated the Senate’s determination to ensure the improvement of the nation’s education sector.
He said this was because the Senate believed that improvement of the sector would boost national development.
Chukwumerije spoke on Saturday during the committee’s oversight visit to University of Ilorin, Kwara State.
He stated that education remained the bedrock of the growth of any nation, adding that all efforts must be geared towards educational and national development.
Chukwumerije also said that it was imperative to ensure that managements of the nation’s universities worked towards the advancement of the nation.
“The oversight visit of the Senate Committee on Education to the nation’s university is meant to improve the quality and standard of education in the country. We are poised for what can improve the standard so as to boost the nation’s national development,” he said.
Chukwumerije lauded UNILORIN management for its efforts in developing the university.
He noted that the varsity had put in place a good academic model for other nation’s universities to emulate.
According to him, the stable academic state and peaceful atmosphere of the institution, its research development and environment have impacted positively on the academic development of UNILORIN.
Earlier, the institution’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Abdulganiyu Ambali, had said that in spite of what he called the little resources from federal allocation for the varsity, it had been able to add values to the educational advancement and staff development of the university.
According to him, UNILORIN is ranked as one of the leading universities in the country.
Ambali, however, identified insecurity, power failure, accommodation problems as some of the challenges facing the institution.
He said that UNILORIN had been working with private individuals and entities to provide more hostel accommodation for students.
