SGSAH organises internships and artist residencies for PhD researchers to spend up to three months at a partner host organisation, enabling you to enhance your research skills in a wide variety of contexts. These exciting opportunities give you the chance to make a difference to an organisation, whilst developing your skills, networks and CV to take you to the next stage of your career.
Projects can be worked full time, part time or flexibly in blocks. We will pay you the equivalent of an UKRI stipend rate for the duration of your internship or residency and can help with travel and accommodation costs if these aren’t funded by your host organisation. The programme is open to arts and humanities PhD students in Scotland, regardless of funding source.
The Scottish Graduate School for Arts & Humanities hosts an annual Doctoral Research Showcase to illustrate the innovative research being undertaken by arts & humanities doctoral researchers across Scotland.

Requirements for SGSAH Doctoral Internship Programme Qualification
The programme is open to arts and humanities PhD students in Scotland, regardless of funding source. Any doctoral researcher that meets the following criteria can benefit from this programme:
- Any doctoral researcher that meets the following criteria can benefit from this programme:
- You are registered at a SGSAH member HEI;
- You are in 2nd or early in your 3rd year (full time equivalent) at 1 October 2022*;
- You are studying an arts and humanities discipline. The AHRC’s subject coverage is here;
- You are eligible to work in the UK;
- You have not already undertaken an internship or residency through SGSAH’s programme.
*you can apply to undertake a placement in the later/final stages of your PhD provided that you will still be registered at your HEI throughout the total period of the internship and you have full support from your supervisory team.
