School Resumption: UN Encourages State Governments To Put Safety First

As State Governments plan to reopen schools, the United Nations in Nigeria has highlighted the need to boost the confidence of children and teachers by prioritizing safety. According to the UN, the COVID-19 pandemic affected 46 million primary and secondary school learners across Nigeria which resulted in the closure of schools.

The UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Edward Kallon made a statement that was issued by the Chief of Communications, Advocacy and Partnership UNICEF Nigeria, Eliana Drakopoulos, stating that safety in schools should be given utmost importance.

He emphasized that when this is done, it will show the government's commitment to investing in the education sector and justify the support of Nigeria in the safe schools declaration. He further encouraged state governments to put measures in place to strengthen the education sector that can resist future occurrences of pandemic situations.
