School resumption: public schools accused of partial compliance to covid-19 protocols

As some schools across the country resumed on January 18, 2021, for in-person activities, there have been widespread allegations of some of these schools not complying with the laid down COVID-19 guidelines as required.

In some public schools in Kubwa, Bwari local government area, of the FCT, a school official was seen checking the temperature of pupils as they arrived at school, and the pupils went into their various classes without washing or sanitizing their hands. Teachers were also seen with their masks on but only a few of the pupils had their masks on. Some schools in the FCT however complied with the guidelines.

Meanwhile, Ogun state schools are accused of partial compliance to the COVID-19 guidelines as most of the pupils were seen without face masks, as there was no one at the school gate to ensure compliance. It was also noted that some schools provided water and soap in front of classes, but there were no temperature checks for the pupils. Some Ogun state schools had a low turnout of students while others came out en-masse, hence there was no social distancing.

Osun state, on the other hand, witnessed compliance in some schools, and partial compliance in others. Most schools in Osogbo, the state capital that had no thermometers in place to check students, however, turned back students who had gone to school without their face masks on. Two students who were denied entry for not using masks said they could not afford to buy the items as they were only given money for their midday meal.
