School Administrator Urges FG to Use NYSC to Groom Teachers:
A school administrator, Mrs Nkechi Oguejiofor, has urged the Federal Government to use the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) as a platform to groom young graduates into the teaching profession.
Oguejiofor, who is the Administrator of Army Command Secondary School, Abuja, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Abuja.
She said raising teachers among fresh graduates would give the country more quality hands in the profession.
“For the nation’s education sector to move to the desired level, there is the need for incompetent teachers to be flushed out of the system and replaced with new and qualified people,’’ Oguejiofor said.

The school administrator, however, said the graduates who would be turned into teachers through the NYSC scheme must be those who willingly want to join the profession.
“If the government can heed this suggestion, it will go a long way in bringing about a change in the education system.
“Government has to make the NYSC programme a period of training interested graduates who want to go into teaching.
“After their initial training in the camp, they should be posted to schools for their primary assignment and they should be encouraged with better allowances,” she said.
Oguejiofor said poor remuneration and lack of motivation have affected the productivity level of teachers.
She also called for the training and retraining of teachers, as well as the provision of basic learning materials in schools.
The school administrator called for a review of the promotion system for teachers, to enable them rise to the rank of directors and permanent secretaries.
This, she said, will also serve as a motivation for young graduates who want to take teaching as a career.
“There should also be constant inspection of schools to monitor the performance of the teachers, while the school curriculum should focus on producing students and leaders who have character, competence and chemistry,’’ Oguejiofor said.(NAN)
