Quantum Leap Africa (QLA) Carnegie Postdoctoral Fellowships In Data Science for African PostDocs 2023

Quantum Leap Africa (QLA), an independent research center of the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS), invites applications for two Postdoctoral Fellowships in Data Science commencing on October 1, 2023.

The positions are research-oriented without any teaching responsibilities, however, giving seminars is expected as is mentoring young scientists. Teaching opportunities can be arranged depending on preference and demand. The positions provide a competitive salary and administrative support, as well as financial support to attend conferences and international scientific events. The appointment will be full-time, based in Kigali, Rwanda for a period of two (2) years with a possibility of extension, subject to satisfactory performance and funding availability.

Responsibilities: The incumbent of this position will, under the direction of Dr. Issa Karambal, be responsible for leading the research activities of some ongoing projects, including but not limited to the following responsibilities;

  • Lead QLA seminars activities.
  • Mentor and supervise graduate students, as necessary.
  • Get involved in the doctoral training program selection process.
  • Get involved in organizing scientific meetings such as workshops and conferences.
  • Conduct independent research in the field of data science.
  • Publish research results in high-impact academic journals and present at scientific
  • conferences.

Requirements for Carnegie Postdoctoral Fellowships In Data Science Qualification

QLA welcomes applications from motivated and talented African researchers and researchers of African descent. For detailed eligibility, applicants must;

  • Hold a Ph.D. degree in Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics, or a related field.
  • Have an outstanding research record commensurate with their level of experience as
  • demonstrated, for example, through an outstanding thesis, publications, conference
  • presentations, code, etc.
  • Be able to contribute significantly to the research environment at AIMS.
  • Show evidence of academic maturity and independence in planning research activities.
  • Be proficient in Python programming as applicable to the research area.
  • Have experience with one or more deep learning libraries (TensorFlow, PyTorch).
  • Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to work in a
  • team environment.
