Prove Your Worth Through Academic Exploits —-FUTA VC ADVISES NEW STUDENTS

Discipline, orderliness and focus play a pivotal role in achieving academic excellence thereby creating a platform for outstanding academic performance and exploits. The Vice-Chancellor, Federal University of Technology, Akure, FUTA, Professor Adebiyi Daramola stated this during the commencement of the Orientation Programme for the newly admitted students of the Institution for the 2015/2016 academic session.

Professor Daramola while formally welcoming the new students to the University stressed the importance of maintaining a positive and inquisitive attitude to academic activities and social life in order to have a successful and momentous stay in the University. He said “the primary reason why you are here is to acquire skills through intensive training and mentorship by your lecturers and other staff of the University. This is to enable you become better persons and to be able to contribute your quota to the future development of this nation. Prove your worth through your academic exploits and it shall be well with you”.

Professor Daramola who urged the new students to identify with friends who will guarantee value added association told them to desist from engaging in cult related or antisocial activities that will tarnish the corporate image of the University and ultimately destroy their future. His words, “FUTA is great and well known for academic excellence and discipline. You owe it a duty to embrace the University culture and contribute your quotas to make FUTA greater through your conduct”.

While congratulating the students for sailing through a competitive and rigorous admission process, the Vice-Chancellor promised that the University management will play its part to ensure provision of conducive atmosphere that will enhance academic excellence and other related functions.

At the event the Director, Academic Planning, Professor Oyedapo Fagbenro in a paper titled: ‘FUTA: it’s culture, vision and mission’, disclosed that the society is facing a value crisis evident in the corruption, nepotism and other vices eroding the fabric of our national development. He said the youth owe it as a duty to the nation, as future leaders, to imbibe good values that will promote love, peace, tolerance and unity. Professor Fagbenro said that the University has a culture that students must cultivate in order to achieve outstanding performance during and after their academic sojourn.

He urged the students to eschew antisocial devices, stating that the University will not condone any act of intimidation, aggression, violence, drug abuse, alcoholism and hooliganism. Professor Fagbenro admonished students to be alert to their overt duties and responsibilities and work in peace and harmony to develop the University.

Earlier in a welcome address, Dean, Students’ Affairs, Dr. Kayode Alese admonished the new students to be worthy ambassadors of the Institution, adding that a sound moral conduct is of utmost importance in actualizing their academic dreams. Alese further urged the students to take advantage of the good learning environment in the University and maximize every relationship and interaction while exploring and improving their God-given skills and talents.
