1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
(UNION BANK OF NIGERIA PLC OGOJA BRANCH).
The history of union bank of Nigeria plc started with the opening of the colonial bank offices in Lagos, Jos, and Port Harcourt in 1917, in 1925, the bank was acquired by Barclays bank and its name was changed to Barclays bank Doc-Dominion colonial and overseas. The bank developed and grew rapidly over the years. By 1957, branches had been opened in almost all part of the country. For instant Kano, Zaria, Ibadan and Ebuta meta branch were opened in 1988, Aba branch opened in 1926, Ijebuode in 1931, Bida in 1953, Katsina in 1955, Sapele in 1957, Calabar branch was opened in 1958, while Ogoja branch was opened 1973.
In compliance with the directive as government in 1968, that all companies including Banks, must be incorporated locally in Nigeria. In Barclays bank Dco was incorporated in Nigeria in 1969 and it name was consequently change to Barclays bank of Nigeria limited with registered head office at 40 marina Lagos. As a result of Nigeria enterprises promotion Degree (NEPA) of 1972 and 1977, the federal government of Nigeria acquired 52% of the bank share leaving 40% for the Barclays bank international limited (now Barclay bank Plc) while the remaining 8% were taken by Nigeria citizens. Barclays bank Plc 50% of its shares to Nigeria in 1979 reducing 90% following this development the bank name was changed to union bank of Nigeria limited to reflect the new ownership structure that is federal government of Nigeria 52%
private Nigeria investors 28% Barclays bank Plc 20% With this new name, union bank became an indigenous bank and no longer a subsidiary of Barclays bank Plc. Although, Barclay bank Plc continued to offer technical and correspondent service as in the past. In 1989, Barclays bank plc sold the remaining 20% of his share to Nigeria and the new structure since then is federal government of Nigeria 52% and private investors 48%. Today, the bank has well over branches spread throughout the country and a branch in the city of London as five training centers in Yaba, Jos, Zaira, Port Harcourt with a staff strength of well over 11,600 employees.

The responsibilities of the management of union bank are enormous and paramount that only the right persons or group of persons can be vested with these responsibilities. This therefore necessitate the choice of language used in an organization with needs expert knowledge because it can be either affect badly or enhance productivity.This complexity made the researcher to examine whether the communication flow chart that exist in the union bank Ogaja branch has been able to enhance the bank to achieve its efficiency.
1.3 OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY
The purpose of this research is to examine the impact of communication on effective leadership of an organization, taken the following variables:
1 To emphases on how to leads, direct, motivate and create a climate in which people will want to contribute to achieving the organizational objective.
2 To help minimize the constant inability in the management of the banking industry.
3 To widen communication gap in the bank.
1.4 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
The significance and need for this study lies in the importance of communication, which without much emphasis is the root of organizational success, because targeting a setting goal is depending on effective communications. It can not be over emphasized because on completing of this study it will enhance communication for effective leadership in union bank ogoja branch. Ineffective communication in any business organization especially a government parastatals, leads to constant change in leadership insolvency and general attitude to work by the employees.
The study will help to draw the attention of the government, boards of directors to areas of problems identified. The study is also important as it will help to promote a feeling of brotherhood, create understanding and deeper sense of belonging among the staff to treat customers in a pleasant manner, drawing them nearer to the management and also to project the organization in an acceptable mirror of their customers and the general public and of course the study will also encourage communication consciousness and interpretation of ideas for the present and future.

1.7 SCOPE OF THE STUDY
It is obvious that there are other numerous topical issues to be written on as a* research topic. Also topics on communication are much. Therefore for the purpose of clarity, precision and understanding the researcher had been limited to the impact of communication on the effective leadership of an organization, case study of union bank Ogoja branch.
1.8 ASSUMPTION OF THE STUDY
It was assumed that the respondents would cooperated with the researcher within a period of one week to enable the researcher finish and submit the project on schedule. That it least 60% of the questionnaire distributed would be returned to the researcher to justify generation of the investigation. It was also, assumed that when approached for information, the manager and staff of union bank Ogoja will be witting and able to supply the researcher with the needed information’s to facilitate the work of this study.
1.9 LIMITATION OF THE STUDY
It must be emphatically stressed here that it was not very easy while carrying out this research work. One of the paramount problems was the inaccessibility of materials to be used by the researcher. Another predicament encountered by the researcher in the course of this work was finance, infact there was inadequate fund to carry out the research. Lastly, the distribution and collection of questionnaire from the respondents was not very easy.

Hence this work will be examined by other researchers, it is pertinent to define the following terms as it is uses in this research work.
COMMUNICATION: According to Karts and Klan, communication is defined as the exchange of information and transmission of meaning and also as the very essence of a social system or organization communication also define by Contests also the transfer of information from the sender to the receiver with the information being understand by the receiver.
COMMUNICATION FLOW CHART: It is an object, which shows the connection of the different level or department being in touch with others. Through effective communication. It can be define as an organizational chat showing the hierarchy of authority and the activities or function attached to this position.
ORGANISATION: This is the frame work by means of which the work of a business, managerial and other wise is performed, it provides the required channels, points, or origin and flow of management direction and controls.
ORGANIZATION STRUCTURE: This is determines and specification of appropriate operational and functional roles and the resulting relationships,
LEADER (MANAGER): A leader work with and through other people of every level in an organization showing toward achievement of goals.
P. Drucker (managing for results ) stressed the ability to choose appropriate objectives or means to achieve an objective. Leader/manager takes on a wider range of rules in pursuing the objective of the organization, he is hold accountable for the or of others as well as their own he assumes responsibility to see that work is done effectively, he must balance competing goals and needs which require resource which are limited.
