CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1    BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Nurturing and upbringing of a child by parents in the society is a reality, but the bringing up of a child by a single parent has become a practice, which is increasing in the modern society. The issue of single parenting is a sensitive issue that the upbringing of a child should be the responsibility of conventional parent. In this content, bringing up of a child by a single parent under possible conditions and challenges that raising a child entails, the belief of the society over a well cultured and responsible child to be from a conventional family is not in doubt. This is because, the raising up or upbringing of a child by a single parent could result to a well cultured and responsible child in the society in his or her own way, as other children from conventional home do (Yackley, 2012).
In recent times, there has been a drastic increased in single parenting upbringing of children. A total of 56% is recorded by the result of the census done in USA recent study survey 5 shows that conventional upbringing of children has been lost to single parent upbringing of children. In contemporary times, single parent family are a growing trend in the society, today facing challenges and difficulties as well as having too much responsibilities to care for. The fact remains that conventional parent upbringing of children would yield better result when compared to single parenting upbringing. Single parents child upbringing can make children have lesser opportunity of becoming what they really want to make out of themselves, in the sense that single parents care is not always able to meet up to the child’s demand needs and want (Uwubamwen, 2012).
