ROLE OF BROADCAST MEDIA IN ERADICATING ELECTION VIOLENCE
ABSTRACT
The study basically focused attention on role of mass media in eradicating election violence in Osun State (A case study of OSBC, Gold F.M, Unique F.M). Broadcast media have over the years perform a very crucial role in the socio- political and economic development of Nigeria. Mass media are often referred to as the fourth estate of realm because of the power they wield and the oversight function they exercise. The media as a major player in democratic governance have been recognized since the late 17th century, and remains a fundamental principle of modern-day democratic theory and practice especially in educating, enlightening, mobilizing the electorates before, during and after elections. Media have been used to support democracy and development. Quantitative research design was used in which cross-sectional survey method was adopted while the data collection instrument was questionnaire. 120 copies of questionnaire were printed and administered to the respondents. It is obvious from this study that Mass media especially radio and television which provide avenue for the illiterate citizen to get information about political activities do educate and sensitize masses on various activities such as registration, how to handle voter’s card, what to wear during election, how to participate in political rally and campaign, to the activities on election day, coverage of election result, coverage of post election activities like violence and tribunal. It is recommended that Journalists should see their role in community especially during election as vital which they must play their role with sincerity and with caution.
