Principal stresses importance of extra coaching

An educationist, Mrs. Oluwayemisi Oloriade, has urged parents not to criticise their children who are not doing well academically. Oloriade, who is the principal of Wellspring College, Omole Phase 2, Lagos, said rather, such children should be supported with extra coaching hours to ensure that they excel in their studies.

She spoke on Wednesday while assessing the performance of the college in the 2013 Senior School Certificate Examination. According to her, it is improper for parents to neglect such children just because they are slow in learning.

She said, "There could be various reasons why a child may be weak in a particular subject. It may be due to distractions, it may be due to lack of encouragement, even from parents.

It may also be due to the delivery style by the teachers handling such subject. "So, parents must identify the cause of the challenge and provide the needed support for such a child." Oloriade, who said the school did well in various subjects in the SSCE, attributed the feat to the commitment of the teachers and the pupils. The teachers, she said, completed the syllabus with the pupils on time.

She added, "We organised extra coaching hours and Saturday lessons to make sure that the syllabus in each subject was covered. Coaching clinic was also organised for students lagging behind in various subjects to enable them to meet with the expected standard. "We were blessed with teachable pupils who were ready to learn and willing to give their best shot at achieving greatness.

Their ability to yield to corrections and humble themselves under the guidance of their teachers and the Holy Spirit resulted in their being honoured with good results." Commending parents, Oloriade said the school could not have excelled in the examination without their cooperation.
