The Kwara State University, Malete says it will establish an alternative energy company in collaboration with a China-based firm to improve electricity supply.
The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Abdulrasheed Na’Allah, said this on Monday while addressing journalists in Ilorin, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.
According to him, the energy company will develop, produce and distribute locally-produced solar system materials as replacement for foreign ones.
He said this would complement the supply of electricity in the country.
Na’Allah said the institution would not rest on its oars to be the pioneer of remarkable feats in the country.
He said the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautic Engineering of the institution was the first in the country and would continue to collaborate with the International Aviation College, Ilorin, to make the nation’s airspace safer.
The Vice-chancellor said, “At the Kwara State University, we are training our students in aeronautics and astronautics engineering for them to become future pilots and engineers of this nation.
“We expose them to training practically and theoretically. We are in partnership with the International Aviation College in Kwara State where they acquire the practical skills.”
He said efforts were on to ensure that the institution receive full accreditation, especially in its engineering and agricultural faculties to enable it to contribute to the nation’s technological and economic advancement.
On entrepreneurial development, the vice-chancellor said the institution would mobilise top executives of tertiary institutions in the country to key into the initiative.
This, he said, would position students for self-reliance and reduce over- dependence on white-collar jobs.
He added efforts were in place to ensure the sustainability of its entrepreneurship programmes.
The VC also stressed the need for rural community development as a means of enhancing economic growth and reducing rural poverty.
Na’Allah said this would give room for local initiatives that would boost the nation’s development.
He acknowledged the support of the state government in positioning the university, stressing that postgraduate programmes would commence fully in the school soon.
He said plans were in the pipeline to establish a radio and television community station to reach out to the host community.
