Police detain 16 students over the alleged destruction of school properties

The families of sixteen students of Ibafo Community High School, Ibafo, Ogun State, have protested against the continuous detention of their children by the Ogun state police command over the alleged destruction of school properties worth N2 million.

It was gathered that the arrested students, comprising both males and females, were involved in a fight with teachers at the school on Thursday, October 20, 2022, which led to the destruction of the school's properties.

Following their arrest, their protesting families have accused the police and the school management of denying them access to the underaged students as all efforts to secure their release have been futile. They explained that a meeting between the parents of all the students in the school, elders, teachers, and the school management was convened where it was decided that each student pays a fine of N700 to cover up for the N2 million damaged properties. However, they have not been allowed to see their children for over seven days.

One of the aggrieved parents revealed that her daughter was picked up from their house on Friday, October 21, after being accused of stealing a waste basket belonging to the school. Another parent also narrated that her daughter was arrested with handcuff, after being accused of stealing a book during the fight.

The state's police spokesperson, Abimbola Oyeyemi, when contacted said that he was not aware of the detention of the pupils.
