The National Universities Commission (NUC) has disclosed that out of the 170 public and private universities currently operating in Nigeria, only 25 universities have received full courses accreditation from the commission.
This was contained in the commission's 2021 universities ranking report, compiled by a team of experts drawn from the academic planning units of 91 universities and headed by former NUC Executive Secretary, Prof. Peter Okebukola.
In the report, it is revealed that 31 universities have over 90 percent of their courses accredited, 20 have over 80 percent accredited, 11 have above 70 percent while 11 universities have between zero and 50 percent accredited courses.
The commission mentioned the Nigeria Army University, Biu, Borno State, Air Force Institute of Technology and 6 other institutions as schools with no accredited courses.
On the other hand, the University of Ibadan (UI) is rated Nigeria's best university with 454.56 points, Redeemers University (RUN) took up the second spot with 384.96 points; Covenant University (368.11 points); Ladoke Akintoka University, Ogbomoso (315.23 points) and Federal University of Technology Akure (264.14 points). However, none of the best-ranked universities were listed among the 25 institution that have their courses 100 percent accredited.
Some of the 25 universities with fully accredited courses include; Adeleke University, Osun State; Al-Qalam University, Katsina State; Caleb University, Lagos State; Chrisland University, Lagos State; Crescent University, Ogun State; Federal University, Lokoja, Federal University, Wukari, Federal University, Kashere, among others.
