NYSC Should Post Engineers to Engineering Firms – COREN:

Director General of the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), Engr. Kashim Ali has appealed that the management of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) should be posting corps members to engineering firms for their one year service to enable them enhance their engineering skills.

Speaking when he led a team on a courtesy visit to the NYSC DG yesterday in Abuja, Engr. Ali said over 80 percent of government funds are channeled at engineering infrastructures hence the need to train graduates to be better equipped on their skills.

Ali said any engineer without practical experience “is at best a half-baked engineer.”

He said part of the council’s efforts to enhance engineering education and practice in the country was the introduction of a two year internship programme called  Students Industrial Training Scheme in Engineering (SITSIE) where “graduates of engineering are expected to undergo industry based structured training and exposed to practical training.”

Director General of the NYSC scheme, Brigadier General Johnson Olawumi said the request was a relevant one as it was important for engineers to be properly equipped in their field. (Daily Trust)
