Following the closure of public primary and secondary Schools in Abia as a result of the industrial action by the state wing of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), the Eastern Regional Working Committee of the NUT, comprising the nine states of the defunct Eastern Region, has given the Abia State Government condition for reopening.
The Regional Chairman who also doubles as the Chairman of NUT Akwa Ibom State, Comrade Etim Etim Ukpong during a solidarity visit to the state demanded the clearance of the 12 months arrears of salary as a condition to call off the strike.
Ukpong maintained that the on-going strike will not be called off until the accumulated salary arrears are cleared, and called on the state governor, Okezie Ikpeazu to act fast and address the issues raised.
Recall that the Abia state chapter of the NUT had claimed that its members in senior secondary schools are being owed 12 months' salaries arrears while their counterparts in the Junior Secondary School are owed for 11 months. Read here
