NUC Scraps Illegal Courses In Universities Of Agriculture And Technology

In line with its earlier directive that all specialized universities offering courses outside their mandate should remove those courses from the programmes, the National Universities Commission, NUC, has begun moves to ensure that the specialized universities comply with this directive.

These specialized universities are universities of agriculture and technology. These universities were established to develop manpower and capacity in agricultural and technological related fields respectively but over time most of them started offering courses like law, accounting, and business administration, among others which are outside their original mandate.

According to the NUC’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Ibrahim Yakasai,  the commission recently had a meeting with JAMB officials and the Vice Chancellors of these specialized universities to harmonize the courses offered by the universities.  He said they are currently looking at the list of the courses offered by these universities and will de-list and discredit those ones that are not in line with their mandate and approve the ones that are in line and forward the list of approved ones to JAMB.

Concerning students who are already studying such courses, the spokesman said that such students will be allowed to complete their studies.

Also, lecturers teaching those illegal courses in specialized universities will be deployed to other related approved courses in the universities.
