NMA kicks against the reopening of schools

The controversy trailing school resumption across the country keeps growing as various bodies and associations express their concerns and reservations. The national body of the Nigeria Medical Association, NMA has reacted to the government's decision on reopening schools amidst the second wave of COVID-19.

In an interview on Monday, January 18, the President of the association, Prof. Innocent Ujah, said the decisions on reopening of schools weren't based on experts' advice as expected but on sentiments. He argued that Nigeria doesn’t have the appropriate statistics to know the schools that have put in place standard measures to observe the COVID19 protocols.

Ujah maintained that Nigerian schools are not ready for resumption, saying the country is already overwhelmed by the second wave of the coronavirus, and there is no enough preparation and monitoring of school children to ensure adherence to the laid down COVID-19 protocols.
