As the world celebrates its teachers today, Nigeria has joined the International Community to mark this year’s World Teachers' Day. The Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) has advised its members to build their capacities to be able to meet up with the challenges of the new normal.
The Secretary-General of NUT, Dr Mike Ike-Ene stated that teachers needed to put on their professional caps, stressing that COVID-19 had placed greater burdens on teachers and they needed to be more creative, resilient and innovative.

The World Teachers' Day is being celebrated on the 5th of October every year to appreciate, assess and improve the educators including teachers, researchers and professors worldwide and to provide an opportunity to consider issues related to teachers and teaching.
The theme for World Teachers’ Day 2020 is “Teachers: Leading in Crisis, Reimagining the Future” which aims to address the role of teachers during the COVID-19 pandemic. More than ever before, the impacts of these veterans were felt during the COVID-19 pandemic that brought to fore, the role they play in the development of students and society.
According to UNESCO, the day provides an annual occasion to take stock of achievements and raise awareness around challenges facing teachers and the role of teachers in the achievement of global education targets.
World Teachers’ Day is celebrated by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) in partnership with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and Education International as well as other education bodies and associations across the world.
