Governor Babangida Aliyu of Niger State recently revealed that the Niger State University of Education, Minna formerly Niger State College of Education will commence academic activities by September, 2014.
Speaking during the inauguration of the projects the governor also said that the Provost of the College of Education, Professor Umar Abdulrasheed, is the pioneer Vice Chancellor of the University of Education while the Chairman, Governing Board of the College of Education, Prof. Mohammed Daniyan, will also be the Chancellor of the proposed university.
N500 million Introductory Technology Centre (ITC); 1, 000 sitting capacity lecture theatre as well as the construction and equipment of a Micro Finance Bank and a campus FM Radio station were among the projects.
He also noted that the state owned institution Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU), Lapai will no longer admit students into education related courses as it will be merged with the proposed Niger state University of education.
According to him, the Niger State Government has acquired additional 200 hectares of land to be used by the new university in the nearest future while plans are on ground for the construction of a workers’ village for the benefit of both the staff of the IBBU Lapai and the University of Education, Minna.
The Niger State government has also paid for resource inspection of facilities as provided for the immediate take-off of the university in September, 2014 as a pre-condition for the National Universities Commission’s approval.
