Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, has announced the establishment of a new state university in his hometown, Ogboko, in Ideato South Local Council of the state.
The governor disclosed this yesterday when he visited the National Universities Commission (NUC), to submit the Law and Order Planning Document for the university, to be known as Eastern Palm University.
He revealed that plans are also underway to establish three more universities in the state.
His words: “That long journey that started is now history, and because of my love for education, I had proposed to move the entire Imo State University to the place, but for political exigencies, that was not possible and hence the need to establish the Eastern Palm University.”
According to him, “There is need for more universities in the state, because education is our number one industry. We have also made plans to establish the Imo Layola University, Imo Catholic University, and Imo Anglican University.
He said that the State House of Assembly had accented to the establishment of the Eastern Palm University, to bring human capital development closer to the people.
Okorocha called for the classification of Nigerian universities, as being practiced in other nations.
In his address at the event, NUC Executive Secretary, Prof Julius Okojie, called for an adoption of martial plan for education in Nigeria
Presenting the certificate of recognition, Okojie urged the governor to put everything in place, in order to ensure a smooth takeoff of the university.
