VC Stresses Need to Deepen Research in Nigerian Varsities:

Prof. Michael Faborode, Secretary General, Committee of Vice Chancellors of Nigerian Universities, has stressed the need to deepen research in the Nigerian University System.

Faborade, said that research would impact positively on the country’s economy.

“Research in all the areas of knowledge, humanities, social sciences, biological and medical sciences as well as physical science and technology will have a positive impact on the economy.

“It is counter-productive and dissipating for us to continue to run an underdeveloped economy.

“Looking outside for expertise and knowledge should not be the first recourse to solving our national problems.

“Nigerian problems are better solved by Nigerian experts on the basis of deep and researched understanding from our Nigerian university system,’’ Faborade said.

He said that Nigerian universities must be able to assist in addressing and remedying basic challenges hindering national development.

The secretary-general stressed the need for Nigerians to acknowledge the importance and essence of research in the universities system.

He called on researchers and academicians involved in the planning and management of the economy as well as  coordinating and funding agencies to be proactive in the discharge of their duties.

“That is why, I cannot but salute Nigeria on the outcome of the 10 projects secured for Nigerian institutions out of the 18 mapped out by the African Centres of Excellence (ACE).

“We have four in the medical sciences, three each in Agriculture and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

“We congratulate the successful institutions,’’ he said. (NAN)
