Examiners who marked the 2024 National Examinations Council (NECO) papers have issued an ultimatum to the examining body over the non-payment of their allowances.
The frustrated examiners, who have not been paid for over three months, are rallying colleagues across the country for a potential nationwide protest if their demands are not met.
A letter dated November 8, 2024, from examiners in Kano, circulated to their counterparts in Plateau State, reveals their frustration with the delay in payment despite the release of candidates' results. The examiners have set a two-week deadline for NECO to resolve the issue.
“If this matter is not resolved, we will be left with no option but to take coordinated action across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (Abuja),” the letter warned.
The examiners, who have worked tirelessly on the evaluation of the exams, expressed dismay at the disregard for their welfare, particularly in light of the ongoing economic difficulties. Some have threatened legal action if their pay is not disbursed promptly.
Attempts to reach NECO's Chief Registrar, Prof. Dantani Wushishi, for a comment were unsuccessful, as his phone line was unreachable.
