NECO 2013: Over 1.5 Million Students Sitting For Examination

The National Examinations Council (NECO), said over 1.5 million candidates are currently sitting for its senior school certificate examination nationwide. The examinations started on June 1.

The Abuja NECO Coordinator, Mustapha Abdul, told newsmen in Abuja on Tuesday when he took the Board of Directors team led by its Chairman, Paddy Njoku, round some examination centres.

The Chairman, Board of Directors however said that the council was set to introduce a pre-examination orientation in schools to prepare students for its final examination.

“We need to educate our children on the discipline of thoroughness from the homes. It is our responsibility as parents.

“The standard of everything is falling in the society and so, there is the need to adequately prepare our children for these challenges,” he said.

Mr. Njoku said that teachers also had a role to play in preparing their students on other aspects of taking examinations and not just the syllabus. He said that the conduct of the examination had been going on smoothly and the students had been orderly.

Also speaking, the Registrar of JAMB, Promise Okpala, said that candidates were yet to understand what it entailed to sit for examinations.

“A student could be very brilliant and well prepared for examinations academically, but there are lots of factors that determine success in examinations.

“Unfortunately, most times these factors are not taken into consideration and when the results are out and the students don’t pass, or the results are not released, they blame NECO. The question therefore is did they do the correct thing?” he said.
