Nasarawa SUBEB Discovers 78 Teachers Using a Single Bank Account

Nasarawa SUBEB Discovers 78 Teachers Using a Single Bank Account:

Nasarawa State Universal Basic education Board (NSUBEB) has discovered a single account being used by 78 primary school teachers.

NSUBEB discovered this during  its drive to ensure 100 per cent e-payment of teachers’ salaries.

Presenting the successes recorded so far in the e-payment system to  the board members of NSUBEB, the executive chairman of the board, Mallam Abdulkarim Mohammed, maintained that although the commencement  of the e-payment has been applauded, it has also recorded some problems in the course of its implementation.

He stated that 221 primary school teachers out of about 20,000 in the state had no bank accounts as at the time the e-payment commenced in December, adding that 351 teachers had duplicate accounts which forced the bank to withhold their salaries pending the resolution of the matter.

He said the initial problem they had was getting accurate staff data from the local education authorities and that it  was also discovered that some teachers were paid higher salaries due to inaccurate compilation of data. “The exercise also revealed that some teachers who were on grade level 3 were being paid salaries of grade level 7 or above because there was not proper monitoring,” he added.

Mallam Mohammed, who stressed that the e-payment has exposed enormous irregularities in the administration of teachers’ salaries formerly carried out by the Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, noted that so far the adoption of e-payment has revealed discrepancies with regard to teachers who have died, retired or resigned from service.

The board has therefore embarked on creating an accurate and comprehensive database for primary school teachers in the state which will involve biometric data capture which will be used for annual school census to checkmate any case of fraud or other irregularities. (Leadership)
