Nasarawa Approves N280m Bursary For Students – The Nasarawa state governor, Umaru Tanko Al-Makura, has approved the sum of N280, 197, 800. 00 for disbursment as bursary to students of Nasarawa state origin studying in various higher institutions of learning across the country.

The executive secretary of the state scholarship board, Sulaiman Abdulwahab Sulaiman made this known yesterday in a press statement issued to journalists in Lafia.

The executive secretary who took his time to review the activities of the board, said Governor Al-Makura approved the sum for the 2013/14 academic year.

He further disclosed that so far, 38 students from the state were successful in previous federal scholarship scheme and were currently undergoing study at various universities in the country while eight others were equally successful under the Bilateral Education Agreement (BEA) and now attending universities in Russia, Morocco and Turkey.

The release stated that students attending law school will receive N100, 000, those attending Maritime Academy and College of Aviation Technology will get N50, 000 each while students reading medicine, pharmacy and education, will receive N60, 000 and N50, 000 respectively.

Students undergoing undergraduate studies in other fields as well as those attending polytechnics will receive various sums ranging from N30, 000 to N10, 000 depending on their levels.

Physically challenged persons undergoing studies at any higher institution will receive N20, 000 as bursary.

Meanwhile, Sulaiman also disclosed that so far, the state government has spent additional N66 million as bursaries for its 14 students studying medicine and engineering courses in Ukraine since 2011 till date.

On the disbursement of the bursaries, the executive secretary said 30th June has been fixed for the commencement of the exercise, with the state governor expected to flag it off at the state university in Keffi.

Sulaiman added that Governor Al-Makura, conscious of the plight of the students, had waved aside, the total cost of the e-disbursement card valued at N18. 7 million.

He added that he has agreed to give relief to the entire students through the payment of their union dues to the Nasarawa State Students Association (NASSA). (Leadership)
