NANS's advocacy for improved schools' supervision excites Towergate

The Proprietress, Towergate Private Schools, Ipaja, Lagos, Mrs. Funmilayo Owode, has backed the National Association of Nigerian Students' advocacy for improved supervision and monitoring of schools in order to enhance quality education delivery in the country.

Owode, who said this while speaking during the 2013 valedictory programme of the school, said she was impressed with the leadership of NANS who, she said, came to her school not just to honour the institution but to also take their campaign for better supervision of schools by the government in the country.

"The major concerns of the current leadership of NANS about the need to strengthen the supervisory units of ministries of education in states across the country should be supported by all. I was impressed when they came to the school and gave us an award of recognition in sound education delivery and they told the management about their concern for inadequate monitoring of schools' education delivery methods.

"Yes, we are excited about the award but much more about their campaign for improved supervision of schools. It is exciting because it is coming from youths and I think government should do something about it. It is not good to leave the education sector in the hands of quacks and business people. We should heed their call," she said.

Owode added that the management was surprised when NANS gave the award of excellence to the institution for what the union described as its outstanding performance and contribution towards the development of primary and secondary education in the country. Earlier, Owode had implored the 84 graduating pupils to deploy the virtues of good character, hard work and excellence imparted into them by the school to their daily living in tertiary institutions.

Today, you have passes through a stage in your life and I want to advise you to brace for the challenges ahead. I want to tell you that it is tougher out there than what you have gone through in the school. However, Towergate has given you all the training necessary to face all the challenges of the future. So, make good use of the training given to you here and never forget to put God first, she said.

The Chairman of the occasion, Mr. Asuoha Cyprian, also advised parents to see the task of giving qualitative education to their children an important one.

He said, "We should be highly committed to our duty of giving them not only quality education but also proper moral upbringing which will make them better leaders of tomorrow." Highlight of the event include cultural dance, salsa dance, saxophone presentation, music by the school's choir and presentation of awards to outstanding pupils
