NANS seeks intervention, demands removal of AAU VC

The National Association of Nigerian Students has called on the Federal Government and the National Universities Commission to intervene in the crisis rocking the Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma.

The association also demanded the removal of the acting vice-chancellor of the institution, Prof. Cordelia Agbebaku.

The Vice-President of NANS (External Affairs), Mr. Peculiar Asemota, in a statement on Monday expressed concern over what the association called “the trend of deleterious events at the university.”

The association also demanded the immediate resignation of Agbebaku.

NANS said, “Prof. Agbebaku’s name should be struck out from the list of eligible candidates for contesting the vice-chancellorship. The National Universities Commission and the Federal Ministry of Education should intervene in this matter.

“In the event that Prof. Agbebaku fails to resign, we call on the Edo State governor, who appointed her in the first instance, to effect her immediate sacking as acting contrary will be tantamount to illegality.

“This hitherto revered citadel of learning is being rapidly plummeted down the labyrinth of ignominy as favoritism and strong arm tactics now thrive above merit. Academics and other allied activities at the Ambrose Alli University have not only been stagnated, they are also now auto piloted on a reverse gear since May 2011.

“It is amply clear that round pegs are stuffed into square holes, edgy gaps will definitely remain for impurities to permeate as is the case in AAU. The cases of examination malpractice and results manipulations, hitherto nipped in the bud, have now escalated in the university.”

Noting that it would not watch the sector debased, the association added, “It is on the heels of this that we herein sound our utter disenchantment that all concerned parties should join in halting the decline in the university and in the nation’s educational standards in general.”
