NANS in Gambia Elect New Excos:

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) in The Gambia Saturday elected a new student council at the Nigeria High Commission in Bakau.

Nigerian students from different institutions of learning in The Gambia were present at the High Commission to exercise their student political rights towards good leadership.

Students from University of The Gambia (UTG), Stratford College of Management The Gambia, Gambia Technical Training Institute (GTTI), the American International University West Africa (AIUWA), the Gambia School of Nursing and Institute of Public Administration and Management (IPAM) were all present at the elections.

Before casting their votes, Ekeh Malachi, the electoral commissioner, underscored the importance of the election, which he said is to foster good relationship amongst students and to showcase unity that exists amongst the Nigerian community in The Gambia.

He reminded his colleagues about the eligibility of requirement of casting vote, which he said include: a holder of a Nigerian national passport, a student ID card and holder of a Gambian residential permit before one can be allowed to vote.

The contested positions were: president, vice-president, secretary general, treasurer, sports secretary, Education and Research secretary, public relation officer (PRO), and social secretary. Voting went on peacefully up to the closing time at 4pm, while students waited anxiously for the announcement of the results.

The electoral commission began counting at 4:15 pm. At the end of the counting, Akinwale A. Akinyosoye emerged as president of the NANS in The Gambia with 80 votes. Akinyosoye, a student of the UTG, assured the gathering that he together with his council will work for the interest of the Association.

According to him, the work put to him and his council is a big challenge, while calling on them to work together to achieve their goals and to make the Nigerian community to be stronger.

thus thanked the entire student body, lecturers and the Nigeria High Commissioner, for giving them the support throughout their preparation to the end of the event. The students expressed happiness about the smooth running of the election.
