Meet the new VC of Federal University Oye-Ekiti - Prof. Isaac Asuzu

As the saying goes, the only thing constant in life is change. So when the pioneer Vice Chancellor of Federal University Oye (FUOYE), Prof. Chinedu Nebo, was drafted into the Federal Executive Council of the Federal Republic of Nigeria by the president and commander in chief of the armed forces, it was a matter of time before his successor took over at the new university. The new helmsman is Prof. Isaac Uzoma Asuzu, an erudite scholar and distinguished professor of Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology .

Prof. Asuzu’s appointment, announced February 18, 2013 by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, was on the recommendation of the Minister for Education, Prof. Ruqqyyatu Rufa’i through the National Universities Commission (NUC) Executive Secretary, Prof. Julius Okogie. The new Vice Chancellor has since assumed duties in response to the directive of the President.

Professor Isaac Asuzu was born on November 13, 1953 and is a native of Ogwa in the Mbaitolu Local Government Area of Imo State. The seasoned academic whose career started way back in 1982 as Lecturer II, had his secondary education at the Government College Afikpo from where he graduated in 1973. He was the senior prefect during his time there. He thereafter was admitted into the University of Nigeria Nsukka in 1974 and graduated in 1980.

In what has become a sterling career, Asuzu has been principally involved in a lot of research works – with special interest in medicinal plants; especially those abounding in tropical Africa.

Prof Isaac Uzoma Asuzu was appointed Professor at the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN), in 1992, and since then had been first, Deputy Vice Chancellor Administration under Prof. Nebo’s vice chancellorship, and thereafter, DVC Academic, under Professor Barth Okolo, the incumbent vice chancellor of UNN.

Prof. Asuzu is married to Mrs. Chinwe Asuzu, a professional botanist and academic, lecturing at UNN. She has just rounded off her doctorate program in that university. The union is blessed with four children.
