Most federal universities in Nigeria do not accept being chosen as a second choice of university during the UTME registration process, so instead of missing out on the admission process for that year, the rich kids opt for private universities in Nigeria not minding their tuition fees

LIST OF FEDERAL UNIVERSITIES IN NIGERIA (Current List)

1. University of Ibadan

This is the first University in Nigeria established in 1948 and tops the list of federal universities in Nigeria. it was formerly a college of the university of London special scheme until 1962 before it became an independent university.

2. Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU)

One of the topmost Federal Universities in Nigeria known for its unique structure and unaltered topography. Obafemi Awolowo Universit was founded in 1962 as the University of Ife before the name was changed to Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State.

3. University of Benin (UNIBEN)

My Alma-mata, fondly known as Uniben, students refer to themselves as Unibest! The university of Benin boasts among the top Federal Universities in Nigeria. It was established in 1970 as an Institute of Technology before attaining the level of a full fledged federal university in Nigeria the following year (1971)

4. Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi

This university boasts of one of the best universities in the north, it was founded in 1980 as the Federal University of Technology, Bauchi. The university was merged with Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria on October 1st 1984, and the name was subsequently changed to Abubakar Tafawa Balewa College, Ahmadu Bello University, Bauchi campus.

5. Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria

Unarguably one of the Federal Universities in Nigeria, fondly known as ABU Zaria was formerly a federal government research university ABU Zaria was founded on October 4, 1962, as the University of Northern Nigeria

6. Bayero University,Kano

This university joined the list of Federal Universities in Nigeria in 1977, when it was renamed from Bayero University College and upgraded from university college to university.

7. Federal University Gashua

This federal university was established in 2010 during the reform in the education sector by the Federal government.

8. Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Efurun

FUPRE also falls under the category of Federal Universities in Nigeria. The university of petroleum Effurun was founded on the 14th March 2007.

9. Federal University of Technology, Akure

This Federal university of technology was founded in 1981 by the Federal government of Nigeria. It is commonly called FUTA.

10. Federal University of Technology, Minna

This university of technology in Nigeria was founded in 1983, the introduction of this university in the north is a boost in the educating of northern youths.

11. Federal University of Technology, Owerri

This university is situated in Owerri, Imo state. It also falls under the list of NUC Federal Universities in Nigeria and was established in 1983.

12. University of Lagos

Popularly known as unilag, is situated in the south western part of Nigeria, Lagos precisely, it is one of the best Federal Universities in Nigeria without doubt, talk of style and class, this federal university oozes them without filters, though this is a plus, judging from where it is situated (yaba, Lagos State.) The university of Lagos was established in 1962.

12. Federal University, Dutse, Jigawa State

It is also one of the Federal Universities in Nigeria situated in the Northern part of the country. federal University of Duste was established in 2011 it is one of the new federal universities in Nigeria created during the educational reforms in 2010.
