The house of representatives committee on tertiary institutions and services has been asked to investigate the payment of “high acceptance fees” charged by some government-owned tertiary institutions in the country. This was necessitated following a motion moved by Julius Ihonvbere, a lawmaker from Edo, during the plenary session on Wednesday, April 21.
Ihonvbere in his debate had argued that the uncontrolled charging of high acceptance fees by some public universities for new students across the country has become a matter of great concern to many families, as these fees now constitute a problem to the smooth process of entry into universities.
The lawmaker queried why some of these government-owned institutions charge high acceptance fees, while some are charging minimal fees, and others do not charge anything, thus raising the question as to whether the institutions were not established under the same law.
He added that the situation may reduce the number of students gaining admission into tertiary institutions in the country if it remains left unchecked.
