Lawmakers Reject Bill To Make History A Compulsory Subject For Students

Nigerian lawmakers on Thursday threw out a bill seeking to make history a core learning subject in schools across the country.

Ayodeji Oladimeji, from Oyo State who proposed this bill titled “A Bill for an Act to Make History a Core School Subject in Nigeria’s Primary and Secondary Schools,” stressed that the bill was to address the widespread of ignorance, of Nigerian History and even historical events.

Mr. Mohammed, an APC lawmaker from Kwara State, said he understood the need for the students to be familiar with Nigerian history, he noted that the word "core" is problematic and blocked it from passing a second reading.

Speaker Yakubu Dogara, however, urged him to go and rework the bill.
