LASU students shut gates in protest of soldiers maltreatment

On Monday, March 6, 2023, students of the Lagos State University, Ojo, barricaded the entrance of the institution in protest against the alleged molestation and maltreatment of students by military men.

It was gathered that the aggrieved students locked up both the Iyana-Iba and Ojo gates during the protest, thereby preventing both vehicular and pedestrian movement after some soldiers beat up student government executive members.

According to reports, the SUG President and other executive members had prevented voters whose polling units were inside the university campus from gaining access on Feb 25, to cast their votes during the presidential election. The SUG claimed this was done for the safety of its students as it wanted students to vote first before letting outsiders in.

However, the community members eventually gained access and went in with soldiers who beat up the executives and some students.

Normalcy has since been restored at the school as confirmed by the institution’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Olaniyi Jeariogbe.
