LASU Students Implore Pro-Chancellor to Intervene School Fees Hike

LASU Students Beg Pro-Chancellor to Intervene School Fees Hike:

The students, implored on the Pro-Chancellor, Olabode Augusto, at a meeting with the institution’s Governing Council in Lagos, to intensify efforts at reducing the high tuition fees of the university and requested that the tuition fees be reduced by at least 60 per cent.

“If it is not possible to go back to N25,000, it will be reasonable for us to pay between N50,000 and 100,000; but paying between N198,000 and N350,000 will be outrageous,’’ the students said.

Mr. Augusto said that promoting academic excellence, peace and improving the welfare of students were the priorities of the council.

He said the council has noted the complaints of the students and was committed to tackling all the issues.

The chairman said the meeting was to avail the students the opportunity to rub minds with their pro-chancellor and suggest
workable solutions to all identified problems.

He urged the students to continue to dialogue with appropriate authorities to ensure peace and stable academic calendar as government
was already looking into their complaints.

“The governing council is committed to delivering uninterrupted academic calendar and the provision of modern facilities to enable the students to excel in their academic pursuit.’’

Mr. Augusto said the council would also ensure full accreditation of all programmes in the university and improve on the beautification of the environment.

No fewer than 2,000 students of the institution attended the meeting.

The meeting, however, ended in deadlock, as no conclusion was reached between the parties.

The Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola, had on April 3, summoned the students and the National Association of Nigerian students, NANS, to a meeting over the fees hike.

The governor, however, requested the students to bring forward a proposal to him on the issue for consideration by the state executive council.

LASU students’ representatives said that the proposal had been submitted and they expected positive response.
