Lagos State University (LASU) has achieved a groundbreaking milestone, securing the top position as the leading university in Sub-Saharan Africa in the 2024 Universitas Indonesia (UI) GreenMetric World University Rankings. For the third year running, LASU also retained its title as the best university in Nigeria, marking an impressive feat for the Lagos-based institution.
In a global live broadcast from Universidade São Paulo on December 12, 2024, the UI GreenMetric ranking body announced the institution’s remarkable progress. LASU advanced to the 23rd spot in Africa, improving from 25th in 2023, and climbed to 709th globally from 761st position last year.
Now in its 15th edition, the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings evaluated 1,477 universities across 95 nations, making it one of the most trusted frameworks for assessing sustainability initiatives at educational institutions worldwide.
This achievement comes shortly after the Times Higher Education Sub-Saharan Africa Universities Ranking recognized LASU as the top state university in Nigeria, the second-best public institution, the fourth overall in the nation, and 30th on the continent. Among African universities, LASU stood out in a predominantly North African-dominated list, recording its best performance to date in sustainability rankings.
Reacting to the news, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM, lauded the collective efforts of the university community in driving this success. She extended gratitude to the Lagos State Government for its unwavering support and affirmed her administration’s commitment to sustaining excellence through impactful leadership.
Earlier in the year, LASU also gained significant recognition by emerging as the second most sought-after university in the 2024 Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination, following its third-place finish the previous year. With a reputation as Nigeria’s most digitally advanced state university and a leading institution in the AD Scientific Index Ranking, LASU continues to set a high bar for academic and technological innovation across the country.
