The Lagos State Ministry of Education has directed junior secondary and primary schools operating in the state to re-introduce History as a mandatory subject to their teaching curriculum.
The ministry gave the directive in a statement issued on Saturday, August 13, saying that the subject is to be offered as an elective (optional course) in senior secondary schools.
The statement clarified that the move is in line with the directives from the Nigerian Education Research and Development Council (NERDC) for the re-introduction of the course as a core subject in schools across the country.
Consequently, History will henceforth be taught as a compulsory subject for both primary and junior secondary school classes, and an elective subject in senior secondary school.
The ministry further directed schools to teach the subject in primaries 1 and 2 and JSS 1 and 2 classes in the 2022/2023 academic session.
