Lagos Commences Teaching of German, Chinese Languages in Schools:

The Lagos State government  said it had commenced pilot teaching and learning of both German and Chinese (Mandarin) languages in six schools in the state.

The state commissioner for education, Mrs Olayinka Oladunjoye, who disclosed this recently at a briefing in Lagos, said Birch Freeman Senior High School was the pilot school for teaching of German languages.

According to him, government officials have visited the school to ascertain the level of commitment of German Embassy in the German School partner project.

On learning and teaching of Chinese she said the pilot programme started in 2013 in Bolade Junior Grammar School and Oshodi and Ikeja Junior Grammar School.

Other schools he said are Immaculate Heart Comprehensive Junior High School, Maryland; Mende Junior High School, Maryland and New Era Junior Girls School, Surulere.

Oladunjoye added, “That officers of the state Mandarin Junior club demonstrated the use of Chinese language software proposed for primary and secondary schools in Lagos State and I wish to state that we are currently studying it with a view to taking decision”.

She said 35 students selected from the state’s six education districts went to Porto-Novo. (Leadership)
