Kwara Sets to Disengage Unqualified Teachers

Kwara State government has resolved to ease out primary and post primary school teachers with no qualifications in education discipline from their teaching job.

This decision is taken just as the government has also concluded arrangements with the government of the Philippines on the citing of a Philippine university in the state.

The state Commissioner for Education, Saka Onimago, who briefed newsmen of the outcome of the weekly State Executive Council meeting, said the teachers would be eased out into the mainstream of the state civil service.

He however explained that the redeployment would be on gradual basis so that it does not affect smoothness of educational activities in schools, while the affected teachers are also allowed to be prepared for the development.

Onimago said the decision of the government to disengage the teachers is informed by the need improve on effectiveness of education received in the schools.

The commissioner, who disclosed that there are 21, 000 teachers with qualifications of National Certificate in Education (NCE) in the state, said only teachers with this would be allowed to teach in primary and junior secondary schools.

He said those among the NCE holder teachers without specialisation in primary education would be encouraged to go for a sandwich course to enable them fit in at the level they teach.

The commissioner disclosed that the Philippine university, which he said is named AMA University, would have its temporary site at the old Ilorin Teachers College at Lagos Road area of the Ilorin town, which has seven hectares of land.

He said that the university is wholly owned and to be funded by the Philippines, while the state government provided the land as its temporary site.
