The Kwara state commissioner of Police, Muhammed Bagega has confirmed the arrest of a 24-year-old teacher, Medinat Ibrahim, for allegedly faking her own kidnap just to extort N250,000 from her father.
The culprit who was paraded by the police alongside two other suspects identified as, Amudalat Wahab (30), and Hammed Lekan (28), revealed that she committed the crime to raise money to settle a debt which amounted from the monthly contribution at the private school she serves as a teacher.
According to Medinat, she took to the crime because she was maltreated by her stepmother, and this had put a strain on her relationship with her father. In order to offset a debt incurred during the COVID-19 lockdown, she had to fake her kidnap to get money from her father.
She was arrested alongside her accomplices after the police traced a bank account, belonging to one Hammed Lekan, which was used to cash the N250,000 ransom.
