President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday gave in to the Bill for an Act to further amend the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act No. 11, 1993.
According to a statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, the new Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) (Amendment) Act, 2012, limits the tenure of principal officers of universities to a single term of five years.
The law also increased the compulsory retirement age of
staffs in the professorial cadre(ASUU) to 70 years and non-academic staff in Nigerian universities(NASU) to 65 years as earlier agreed upon.
The President also signed the Bill for an Act entitled,
Retirement Age of Staff of Polytechnics and Colleges of
Education (Harmonisation) Act,2012.
The law harmonizes the compulsory retirement age of
staffs of Polytechnics and Colleges of Education to 65
years.
The staffs are also exempted from the public service rule which requires a person to retire from the public service after 35 years.
