Jonathan cancels UNILAG convocation over name change to MAULAG

SchoolGist learnt that the Convocation Ceremony of University of Lagos (Unilag) scheduled to take place on Thursday 17th and Friday 18th January 2013 has been cancelled through the order of President Goodluck Jonathan.

Investigation revealed that the cancellation was as a result of the refusal of the Alumni Association and Governing Council of the University to effect the name change announced by the Federal Government last year.

It will be recalled that the President in a nationwide broadcast last year renamed the institution Moshood Abiola University Lagos (MAULAG) in honour of the acclaimed winner of the June 1993 Presidential election, Late MKO Abiola,a moved rejected by the School authorities.

The case is pending in court. President Jonathan insisted that the new certificates to be issued by the University MUST bear the new name, an order the University authorities have refused to implement. It is yet to be known when the convocation will take place.
