The Nigeria Labour Congress has described the meeting between President Goodluck Jonathan and the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities as the most meaningful since 2009.
The acting General Secretary of the NLC, Mr. Chris Uyot, said in a telephone interview with our correspondent on Wednesday that the Monday to Tuesday meeting between the President and ASUU was the “most meaningful” since the Federal Government signed the contentious agreement with the lecturers’ body in 2009.
Uyot said the discussion focused essentially on the 2009 agreement which was exhaustively examined and dealt with.
Although, the NLC secretary did not make specific comment on when the strike would be called off, he urged ASUU to explain to its members the Federal Government’s offer to the striking university lecturers in order to arrive at the next decision.
He explained that while ASUU was an affiliate union of the NLC, it was the responsibility of the union to decide on whether to call off the strike or not in accordance with standard labour procedure.
Uyot said, “We simply advise that they carry out meaningful consultation with their members and ensure that whatever was offered is explained in totality to members of ASUU.
“I want to say that since the agreement of 2009 was signed, and of the various negotiations that have taken place, this is the most meaningful of the meetings.”
