The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has ordered Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) to offer medicine to a female aspirant of the institution. The female aspirant, Thomas Goodness Shekwobyalo from Niger state was said to have been offered Anatomy instead of the Medicine she applied for by ABU.
The JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede gave this directive in Bwari, Abuja at a review meeting with the representative of the Commissioner for Education in Niger State, Bellu Attahiru, the Admission Officer of ABU, Haruna Ali Mohammed, representatives of the Civil Society Organisations and top officials of the agency.
The girl and the parents who were absent from the meeting despite being invited alleged that she was denied admission to study medicine even after scoring 302 in 2019 UTME because she is a Christian.
However, while reviewing the case of the girl during the meeting, it was discovered that ABU decided to peg its Merit List at two candidates per state leaving out Shekwobyalo from those shortlisted for medicine.
The JAMB Registrar, Oloyede said despite the fact that it has been proven that Shekwobyalo was not discriminated against on religious or ethnic basis; it was wrong for ABU to limit its Merit List to two per state.
Based on this, the JAMB Registrar stated that the board has decided to reverse her Anatomy admission and directed ABU to put her on notice that she has been offered to read Medicine. However, it is left for her to accept or reject.
