The national president of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke has stated that the Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board (JAMB) has no jurisdiction to conduct admission into higher institutions across the country.
According to Osodeke, the empowering of JAMB to handle admission into higher institutions was an intrusion into Universities' autonomy. He explained that it was the responsibility of each university senate to oversee all academic matters in the university including, setting the admission requirements and approval of university undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
Osodeke maintained that JAMB's job is to conduct matriculation examinations for admission into a tertiary institution in Nigeria, appointment of examiners, and the collection/dissemination of information on all matters relating to entrance examinations. He condemned JAMB for acting outside of its powers by regulating activities in Nigerian universities, saying it posed a threat to the autonomy of universities.
He called on JAMB to desist from overstepping its original mandate and allow Universities to decide on admission policies and processes.
