IMSU Postgraduate Admission Requirements For Masters, PGD & Ph.D - How To Apply

Admission requirement as the name implies simply means what is required or needed from you by the institution which gives you the eligibility to apply for admission in the institution. Being familiar with the IMSU postgraduate admission requirements makes it much easier for candidates seeking admission into IMSU school of postgraduate studies (SPGS).

Most people used to assume that all which is needed to gain admission is simply to be able to pay the school’s tuition fee but that is not the case. Every postgraduate course offered in IMSU come with their distinct admission requirements but firstly you need to identify the postgraduate programme that is whether it is PGD (Postgraduate Diploma programme, Masters degree or Ph.D programmes because they are come with their distinct requirements which must be met in order to be eligible to apply for admission.

IMSU POSTGRADUATE ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR FRESH APPLICANTS

Above we talked about all postgraduate courses having their distinct admission requirements however, there are some basic general requirements which applies to all PG aspirants at every level, that is what we have just outlined below so all candidates are to take note of these requirements even as simple as they may be viewed, still has the capacity to mar or make a candidate’s admission process. So in order to stand a chance of applying for admission at IMSU’s SPGS, you must be able to provide the underlisted.

a) All prospective applicants must possess at least five (5) O’level Credit passes at not more than 2 sittings in WASSCE, WAEC or NECO GCE, NABTEB, NECO or TC II.

b) For all Social Science courses, a credit in Mathematics is required. Apart from the basic UME of five (5) credits, two of the credits must be in English and Mathematics in all disciplines in the Faculty of Education. Any candidate who does not satisfy the O’level requirements for the courses of choice shall not be considered for admission.

In addition to the above, there are specific Departmental/Faculty requirements, which applicants have to meet. Details of these are available on this portal. 

IMSU Admission Requirements For Postgraduate Diploma Programmes

Applicants must hold a good honours degree or at least HND, from an institution recognised by the Senate of Imo State University, Owerri. However, applicants for PGD in Construction Management may be considered if they have certain other certificates plus not less than ten years post qualification experience in a related field.

For PGD in Medical Laboratory Science, applicants must possess AIMLS/AIMLT or FIMLT or equivalent qualifications registerable with the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN). 

IMSU Admission Requirements For Masters Degree Programmes

(a) A minimum of Bachelor’s Degree with second class honours in relevant discipline with a minimum CGPA of 3.0 on a 5-point scale, minimum CGPA of 2.4 on 4-pointscale, minimum of 60% on 100% scale or Postgraduate Diploma at Credit or Higher level in the relevant discipline, or equivalent qualification.

(b) For Masters Degree in Education (Measurement and Evaluation) the candidates must have adequate mathematics background.

(c) Applicants for M.Sc. Architecture may be required to present a portfolio of their work and/or appear for interview.

(d) MPA applicants must have a minimum of five years postgraduate working experience.

(e) Applicants to the Masters programme will take a screening test on date to be fixed. 

IMSU Admission Requirements For PhD Degree Programmes

a) Masters degree in the relevant discipline or equivalent qualifications with at least 3.5 CGPA on 5-point scale, 3.00 on a 4 – point scale or 70% on 100%.

b) Applicants for the PhD programme will take a screening test on a date to be fixed. Applicants will find information on this on the SPGS website (www.imsu.edu.ng). 

IMSU Admission Requirements For MPhil/PhD Degree Programmes

a) Masters degree in the relevant discipline or equivalent qualifications with CGPA of 3.0 – 3.49 on 5 – point scale, 2.4 – 2.93 on a 4 – point scale or 60% – 69% on 100%.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

Applicants for the Masters Degree, MPhil/PhD and PhD programmes will take a screening test on a date to be fixed. Applicants will find information on this on the SPGS website (www.imsu.edu.ng).

NYSC Discharge or Exemption Certificate

Candidates are required to attache Photocopies of NYSC discharge or exemption certificate to the completed application forms, to merit consideration.

Submission of Official Transcript

Candidates are advised to apply to their former institutions to forward authenticated copies of their transcripts under sealed cover directly to Secretary, School of Postgraduate Studies (SPGS).

Candidates should note that their application may not be processed without all the supporting documents, including transcript, certificates, passport photographs, and referee reports.

Duration of All Postgraduate Programmes Offered At IMSU School of Postgraduate Studies

i) The normal duration for PGD programme is two semesters for full-time and four semesters for part-time students. For Masters Students, it is three semesters for full-time and six semesters for part-time.

ii) For PhD Programmes, the minimum duration is six semesters for full time and eight semesters for part-time.

iii) In addition to the admission requirements, every candidate in regular employment must submit with his/her application a formal letter of release for Postgraduate studies issued by his/her employer.

IMSU Postgraduate Form: Method of Application

To apply, candidates must purchase the IMSU postgraduate admission forms from the following banks scratch cards from the following Banks:

a) ZENITH BANK

FIRST BANK,

IMO STATE UNIVERSITY MICRO FINANCE BANK,

United Bank for Africa

First City Monument Bank

The cost of scratch card for the PG form is Twenty Thousand Naira (N20,000.00) after which candidates will be required to log on to IMSU official website at www.imsu.edu.ng to complete the application form, print and submit a copy at the School of Postgraduate Studies.
