Imo employs 1,000 teachers, demotes 20 principals

The Imo state government has announced the recruitment of 1,000 teachers to its primary and secondary schools to be engaged with renewable terms and conditions. The Commissioner for Education, Prof. Bernard Ikegwuoha, disclosed this on 20 January, in Owerri.

Ikegwuoha who revealed that 20 principals were demoted and others suspended, said some 400 workers, who had virtually been doing nothing, would be redeployed to the state’s 303 secondaries and 1,800 primary schools.

The commissioner noted that the exercise is meant to downsize and rightsize the education sector, where employees with falsified records would face prosecution. He advised those with payroll issues to visit a website that has been created for that purpose for solutions.

He further called on the state chapter of the NUT who had threaten to embark on strike on January 25th, to approach him for lasting solutions rather than making bare their threats.
